The article above has just appeared on the Brisbane Times website.

Now no matter what you may think of Queensland racing stewards and some of the decisions they make, the simple fact is that – with some exceptions – they like police officers perform a vital role that benefits everyone in he industry by keeping racing at least somewhat clean, and they deserve respect.

More importantly, the men and women who work for the Racing Integrity Commission are just average Australians like you and me working hard to keep a roof over their family’s heads and put food on the table for their kids. They should be able to go to work every day and do their duties safely and without fear of assault or injury.

I don’t know who this 73 year old bloke that has attacked the stewards, and I don’t know who they are either, but it’s lucky the poor bastards haven’t been blinded by whatever it is this violent prick has sprayed in their eyes.

Clearly there is a due process to be followed, but of the stipes assailant is found guilty of the attack – and given what we’ve both now read it’s difficult to see how he wouldn’t be – then he should be prosecuted to the letter of the law in the criminal courts, and be banned from all aspects of the racing industry forever.

Trainers, owners, drivers, jockeys, stable staff, punters, administrators, TAB and tote staff, race course employees and stewards – we’re all in this together and we need to look out for each other. Sure we have differences of opinion, sometimes strong ones, and corruption and crooked conduct needs to be stamped down on hard and eliminated from from the game.

But violence is uncalled for and cannot and must not be tolerated under any circumstances, for every Queensland worker no matter who they are has the right to go to work and do their job and come home to their families unmolested.

Our thoughts are with the stewards who have been attacked, and I’m sure I speak for everyone in the sport when I say we’re sorry this happened to you fellas and are wishing you a speedy recovery and the best of future good health.

As for the bastard who attacked you, I hope QRIC throw the book at him. The stewards didn’t deserve what they copped, but he does and Mick Dowie and the team in the Racing Squad will give it to him too, don’t you worry about that.
