The standard of news reporting and editorial practice at the Courier-Mail has been in free fall for years, and if today’s latest total balls up by the paper is any indication it seems clear that it is getting worse.

See the image reproduced above? That’s pages 4 and 5 of today’s Courier-Mail.

This is the story on the left.

It’s about a 31 year old man alleged to be a member of a Middle-Eastern cocaine trafficking gang operating on the Gold Coast who was arrested in a Surfers Paradise unit on Saturday.

The man appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday charged with extortion, enter premises, trafficking, drugs – funny that, I always thought trafficking by definition involved drugs – and weapons offences, and was remanded in custody to reappear in court on the 15th of January 2018.

Sound familiar?

They are the same stories about the same 31-year-old Middle Eastern man, and repeat the tale of his arrest, court appearance, refusal of bail and his next court date.

Queensland’s ‘leading’ newspaper has splashed the same story twice on adjoining early in the issue near-front pages, and not a single sub-editor, writer, newspaper executive or compositor noticed it before several hundred thousand copies were published and printed.

You would have to be f*cking kidding wouldn’t you?

Hasn’t the Courier’s recently appointed editor Sam Weir ‘AmI?’ got off to a flying start in his new career?

Lets hope the young fella’s not on probation, because if so Sam Weir ‘AmI?’s could be one of the shortest editorial careers in living newspaper memory

Perhaps it’s Groundhog Day today and I’ve missed it.

Perhaps it’s Groundhog Day today and I’ve missed it.

Nah, it’s just crap editorial control.

How embarrassing.
