The early Christmas mail is that one Brisvegas Jockey Manager extraordinaire has revived punters memories of his riding days by leaving his run late but timing it to perfection in the biggest race of his life.
Yes ladies and gentleman the word on Racecourse Road is that Mitchell Speers – the manager of gun hoops Matthew McGillvray, Brad Stewart and Nathan Day – has come from the clouds to finally pop the question to his ever-loving long-term girlfriend the beautiful English rose Claire Farrow, and that after about a quarter of a second’s deliberation Claire has given him the three letter response that he so desperately wanted to hear.
Congratulations from all in the Sport of Kings and Queens to the cracker of a young couple, and we wish them every success in their future life together.
You couldn’t wish for a better Christmas present if you tried could you?
There is one somber note to the celebrations however, and that is the whisper that Claire’s a tad unhappy with the extra kilos Mitch has sneakily slipped on since his jockey days, and has issued riding instructions that he’s to drop at least five of them prior to the big day so that he can scrub up to standard and only be punching about a stone and a half above is weight instead of three.
Never fear though sportsfans, because Santa’s been super busy and has organised the upcoming groom a very special last minute gift – a three month personal training package with Brisbane exercise guru and part-time bookmaker Hayden Flynn.
Those in the know say that while Flynn has assessed young Mitchell as not yet ready for the rigours of carrying his heavily laden with cash bookie’s bag, you can expect to see the veteran conditioner and the jockey manager pounding the pavements of Ascot from 5.00 am every day starting tomorrow, and Hayden has assured Claire that he will have Mitchell as trim as a half-starved Christmas turkey and back to old his riding weight by the time they jump in the Tie the Knot Stakes.
Good on you Mitchell and Claire! May your future married life together be filled with joy, happiness and a stable full of foals.
And Brad, Matt and Nathan: don’t tell Claire, but you better ride plenty of winners in the New Year boys, because the priests whispered in Mitch’s ear that he needs to pay that beauty of a big rock off before he’ll confirm his booking for the Big One!
Love is in the air! And don’t you love it sportfans!
