Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia is a cancer of the worst variety.
Mortality rates for those who suffer from the disease are dire. It is odds on that they will be dead within 5 years.
People who live or work in Gladstone, Queensland, are nearly twice as likely to contract this former cancer than any other Australian.
It is a scandal of Erin Brockovich proportion. But bigger. Much bigger. Because Queenslanders are dying painful, unnecessary deaths from this disease. And not a soul is doing anything about it.
Not the unions, content with collecting their employer encouraged weekly fees.
Not the workers, deluded that their handsome pay packets are worth the cost of their lives.
Not the companies poisoning them, whose raison detre is maximising profits for the shareholder, whatever it takes.
And not the Queensland Government – Labor or Liberal – who so desperately seek to keep the unemployment rate down, and prostate themselves to business in pursuit of political donations and continued power.
Queenslanders are dying, and our Government knows it. But they have covered it up.
It is a scandal of epic proportions. One that I am about to lift the lid on. Big time.
It is a long story, but one that simply must be told.
Here is how it starts.
On 22 May 2007 the then State Member for Gladstone, Liz Cunningham, rose to her feet in Parliament and asked the following question:
For the period 1996-2006 for the areas (a) Gladstone, (b) Central Queensland and (c) Queensland (per capita) reported separately— What is the incidence of leukaemia (all types); cancer (all types); asthma respiratory illness and miscarriage (reported separately)?
On 19 May 2007 she received her answer. It was that
data for specific types of leukaemia indicates a higher rate of chronic lymphoid leukaemia in Gladstone during the period 1996-2004. The rate was 108% higher than all of Queensland and was statistically significant. Over this period, the expected number of leukaemia cases in Gladstone was 9, whereas 19 cases were diagnosed and reported. This is equivalent to one more case of chronic lymphoid leukaemia than would be expected each year in Gladstone. There have been numerous scientific studies, over four decades, into the causes of chronic lymphoid leukaemia, but no environmental risk factors have been clearly identified.
Ms Cunningham sought that the then Minister for Health – Labor’s Stephen Robertson – initiate an inquiry. And that he did, commissioning an investigation by Queensland Health that was delivered in August 2007.
It was a crock, a cover up, and a criminal conspiracy to conceal the concentration of cancer in the industrial town of Gladstone. All involved should be prosecuted and jailed.
This is why.
The City of Gladstone occupies a land area of 128 square kilometres, centred on the industrial town fringing the port managed by the Gladstone Ports Corporation. Almost all of the pollutant industrial plants in the region are located within this 128 square km area.
Gladstone is bordered by the rural shire of Calliope, an agricultural region covering a land area of 5,875 square kilometres. There is almost no industrial activity in the shire.
Despite the fact that Liz Cunningham’s parliamentary question was asked directly about Gladstone, the very first thing that the researchers did was to rort the statistics by adding the Shire of Calliope into the study. WIthout any academic, medical or scientific justification. There was no other purpose but to dilute the Gladstone cancer figures, and mislead the public.
The extract from the report below details the purported rationale as stated by the authors of the investigation:
Calliope Shire was not included in the original data request because the Question on Notice specifically requested data for Gladstone. The question was not set in any specific context, and background was neither provided nor required.
The proximity, in particular, of the communities of Boyne Island, Tannum Sands, Targinnie and Yarwun; the ready movement across local government boundaries in both directions for work and recreation; and the geographical and industrial peculiarities of the area were not entirely understood by the researchers responding to the original request for data.
However, these factors warrant the inclusion of Calliope Shire in this review.
What factors you may ask? That’s a good question, but no answer is given.
It was a con.
The clear idea was to distort the statistics by including 16 000 plus people into the statistics who, in the main, are not – and never have been – exposed daily to the industrial poisons in the Gladstone air and water.
This is how the sleight of hand works.
There are approximately 28 000 people living in Gladstone. If 2 800 of them have orange hair, support the Cowboys, and get cancer; then 10% is number of orange haired, Jonathon Thurston loving cancer victims.
But if you throw in Calliope’s 16 000 residents – and assume that none of them are cancer suffering Cowboy supporters – then all of a sudden there are only 8% who fit the target group of cancer victims.
The number of people in Gladstone who have red hair, JT posters on the wall, and cancer in their lungs hasn’t changed: but the percentage affected by cancer certainly has.
It’s the oldest trick in the book, and the State Government pulled it.
Here’s what the report concluded:
The number of residents of Gladstone City reported to the Cancer Registry with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia during the years 1996-2004 was higher than that expected, in comparison with the state average.
The inclusion of the Calliope data brought the combined observed figure closer to that expected in comparison with the state average.
Of course it did. That was the whole idea.
Its get worse though, because the further purpose of Calliope’s inclusion was the addition of an older statistical group in order to manipulate the numbers.
The way the Government pulled the ruse is complex – which is whole purpose, because they don’t want the average punter to see the trick – but we’ll explain it to you in simple terms.
Imagine that the statistics for deaths from cancer are these below. And pretend that Area 2 is Gladstone.
Clearly Gladstone – Area 2 – has a much higher death rate from cancer, doesn’t it? Numbers don’t lie. But they can, and they do.
Gladstone is a young town, and the median (middle) age is only 32.
Calliope has an older population, comprised predominantly of farmers. These agrarian socialists live and eat well – and as a consequence their median age is 36, four years (or 12%) higher than the median age in Gladstone. And due to the fact that residents of Calliope live and eat well – and aren’t generally exposed to toxic industrial air – they die later.
So they are an ideal staistical set to use to distort and rort the numbers. Take a look below. I have added the two sets of figures together, and then divided them in half, so that all of a sudden the death rate in Gladstone is only 4.6% instead of 5.1%.
But it’s not, is it? There are still 5.1% of people dying in Gladtsone. I’ve just manipulated the figures to make it look like there isn’t.
It’s a con. A rort. A coconut shyster trick. And it’s been pulled on you
It’s not the only scam though that the State Government pulled on you, cheered on all the while by the Gladstone Ports Corporation. Far from it.
They have also deliberately understated the number of people with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, both by under-counting the number of cancer sufferers, and then by changing the goalposts of the study.
Queensland Health don’t even try to hide it. Here is their admission.
The methods for counting cases in the study population and the Cancer Registry data are now slightly different, and it is possible there is some under-enumeration of cases of CLL in Cancer Registry data. This means that the expected number of cases in Gladstone-Calliope, as estimated by using Cancer Registry data, may slightly underestimate the true figure. The other difficulty in explaining the difference is that the boundaries in time and place were defined after the event.
They also told you that the cause of Chronic Lymphocytic Luekemia was not known. That’s a half truth, designed to conceal a lie. The cause hasn’t been conclusively proven, but exposure to chemicals is a well known risk factor.
Yet our Government, via Queensland Health, avowed that there were no known environmental risk factors involved in contracting the disease.
It was a complete and utter lie. We have been deceived, and people are dying.
A US law firm has won several million dollar cases based on evidence that exposure to toxins cause Chronic Lymphocytic Luekemia. The evidence they have gathered is near irrefutable, and big business don’t pay millions if they have a defence.
Think about it – why did they settle? Because they knew the truth. Their workers were killed by the poisons they were exposed to daily in the course of their work.
It’s sickening to find that the people we trust to look after our interests and our State have sold our fellow citizens down the river, isn’t it?
But it only gets worse.
Obviously deciding that Goebbels was right, and that the Big Lie was the best lie, the Government then declared that genetic factors play a huge role in contracting Chronic Lymphocytic Luekemia, and that you have a 7 fold risk of getting this type of cancer if a family member has had it.
This is another absolute cynical lie. There is no medically proven correlation between genetics and a person’s chances of getting Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.
It is an irrefutably environmental disease.
The study Queensland Health quoted was conducted ONLY on patients who had reported a parent, sibling or child who had suffered a lymph disorder. Of course it was going to show a higher rate of cancer.
If you only survey a group of kids whose parents have red hair and support the Cowboys, it’s pretty likely that there will be a higher number of red-headed JT lovers in the survey group than in the general population, isn’t there?
It’s a con.
Just like the claim that the Government make that:
According to the literature, 20 to 30% of cases can be expected to be diagnosed before the age of 55 years.
This is just another absolute lie.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia is an old persons disease, not one that generally afflicts the young.
The real scientific and medical literature – not just the dodgy studies cherry-picked by Queensland Health – show that only 11% of people under the age of 55 contract CLL.
In Gladstone 41% of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia sufferers are under the age of 55.
These are numbers unheard of in the industrialised first world. It is a scandal.
But once again it gets worse, because Queensland Health use this pseudo science to brush away the seriousness of the cancer epidemic affecting Gladstone. They say the prevalence of cancer is all down to bad genes. Or perhaps it’s just an accident of time and place, and simply bad luck.
It’s all a lie. A deliberate, craven, dangerous lie.
What you are not being told is that the family members who have contracted the killer disease have all been exposed to the same contaminants. If you stand under acid rain it doesn’t matter if you are father and son, or absolute strangers. The hard rain’s still gonna fall.
This is the simple and devastating fact.
In Europe 4.9 people in every 100 000 die from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. In Australia the number is 5.9.
In Gladstone the number is nine.
Almost twice as many people in Gladstone contract the deadly Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia disease than in the whole of Europe.
Australians are dying due to the desperate greed of rapacious capital, and a subservient government more concerned with power than the lives of their own citizens. We are being duped and deceived, and our people are dying.
It has to stop.
